This review is for the restaurant portion. Overall it was decent. It's very loud, which is fine, just putting that out there as a fair warning. The food was pretty decent! A bit pricey but I think you're paying extra for the location... Which is fabulous. The view is awesome! I got the jerk chicken tacos and they were good. The service was slow but our waitress was nice and competent. The bathrooms are suuuuper gross. My 5 year old niece had to go and I honestly wanted to take her elsewhere, it was that bad! The type of bathrooms you'd see in a crummy bar past 2am. An entire star was taken off for this issue alone. Not just general cleanliness, which was poor, but it didn't even seem like it would ever clean up well.

I dont often write reviews, as is evident by my profile. Often I think they are too reactionary, and being a small business owner myself, I know that things happen in businesses that are often out of control of management/owners. But the things I experienced at this place yesterday afternoon were actually directly the result of the direction of management, and well, I won't be back. It was a beautiful April day, sun shining, and clearly many in Charleston had the same idea as I - to head to the beach for a warm afternoon. I arrived to Coconut Joes after being allured by the sounds of great reggae music on the oceanview rooftop bar (i know, right! Sounds awesome). I went up the stairs and was immediately met with a line to get in to the place (it's a restaurant downstairs and bar upstairs). After waiting about ten minutes, I got to the front, only to find that I had to pay $10 to get in to the rooftop area. In return, I was given two $5 "chips" which looked like poker chips. I was told these were the "same as cash." The attendant explained the $10 it was NOT to pay the band; rather, it was to keep people from "just hanging out up there and not drinking." Confused and a little irritated, I went up the stairs, curious about what I'd find. I was NOT impressed. There were a few plastic tables - all occupied of course - peppered around a vast rooftop area. Probably 100 people stood around uncomfortably all amongst these tables, bc these were the only places to stand. I went straight to the bar, since that was the only natural refuge, and took out my chips. I saw the drink menu board, and I decided on a margarita, the "classic" one, which was a nice way of saying "cheap house margarita," which is fine with me. And then I waited. And waited. I was standing right there - not one or two deep....right there front and center as the two attendants made drinks. Bar was crowded, but not that crowded. After EASILY 10 minutes I got the lady's attention and ordered my marg. I watched her pour a miniscule splash of plastic bottle tequila (ew) over ice. It seriously covered the bottom half of one of the ice cubes on the bottom of the plastic cup. She filled the rest with the mix they use, and handed it over. "Seven dollars" is all she said. Wow...considering the cheap brand of booze i saw, which costs about $7 for an entire handle at the store, and the amount she poured, which was about a third of a normal drink, I'd say they are bringing in about $700 per bottle of $7 Sauza they serve. But I digress. I handed her my two $5 chips, and she said "thanks." and walked away. I stayed. When I got her attention again, she explained that "yea the chips are the same as cash." So I asked for my change back. Frustrated and rolling her eyes, she came back a few minutes later with two crumpled one dollar bills and another dollar in quarters, dimes, and nickels. What? I was so bewildered...I just left the coins and walked away. I am usually a very good tipper in almost any circumstance, but wow. Moving on though, I "pardon me, excuse me"'d away from the bar area and looked for a place to hang out. All of us former chipholders like myself had nothing to do but basically stand in between, around, and over people who were sitting at the tables and then try not to get bumped into by the other nervous walkers looking for a place to stand and (good luck with this) maybe even find a place to set their overpriced, underpoured fruity cocktail down. Though the music was good and the view even better, I just couldn't stick around for this. With summer right around the corner, this place needs to rethink the service they are offering and decide what's important. Or maybe they already have. Herd a bunch of people in, charge money to make sure they are forced to buy their expensive drinks, and then give them no love. They have your $10 up front, so they don't care if you stick around after that. And since there are so few choices on Isle of Palms and so many tourists, I guess if people like me don't come back, they really don't care. There are throngs of unsuspecting others who will spend their $10 in chips and also leave unhappy. I guess like other establishments in the world that offer poker chips in exchange for money, you gotta know when to hold em and when to fold em. I fold. This place has spoiled the entire IOP experience for me.

Reading some awful posts on this restaurant and am very confused. I've been here twice now and both times have been wonderful! Our waitress was Joell who is just a pleasure to work with. She is a great waitress! We had their Eggs Benedict with a Fried Green Tomato instead of Canadian Bacon. It was the best I've ever had! Second time we had the exact experience. Pouched Eggs are really had to do, this place has it down to perfection!!! I'll be back..

I was really underwhelmed with Coconut Joe's. Actually, the only pleasant part of our experience here this weekend, besides the company I was with, was our server. She's the reason for the second star. We even saw her out later that evening and got her a drink as a thank you. She was really great. The bar/restaurant itself was sad, dingy and sticky. I would not go back if you paid me. Also, they cancel the band of the roof if it rains at all during the day--just FYI.

Decent food, decent service. The drink prices were very reasonable, but the food prices not so much. The servers were friendly, and the service moved quickly. I think they could do some work on their menu!

Coconut Joe's is your average restaurant with on the beach, pretty much aimed at the tourists who visit Isle of Palms. The food is fair but not the best. Most of the seafood that is offered is fried. I will say that during the summer they have "reggae Sundays" which have always been a great time. Basically, they bring in artists who play on their rooftop with a view right on the ocean. On a beautiful day, it is a great place to park and sip on a cold one. Though beware, the cold ones are a bit overpriced given the location.

Mediocre food. Mediocre service. Mediocre experience. Only reason I'd come back is for the location - albeit, a tourist trap - the view and breeze from the beach is nice! Our server, Michael, was polite but often left us needing napkins or water for extended periods of time. /: frustrating.

We ate here after swimming at the beach. The staff were friendly and the service was great. The food was just average. We ordered chips and cheese dip for appetizers, which were ok. I ordered the Mahi Tacos which were average but with some tartar sauce and it was quite awesome. The place doesn't look clean and well-kept but it'll do.

The beach at Isle of Palms has changed a lot over the past couple of decades, but Coconut Joe's is an old-school beach joint. It is a fun place to go and the food and drinks are really good. Their staff is friendly and helpful. During our recent trip to Charleston, we ate at Coconut Joe's several times, and we enjoyed each visit. My favorite breakfast was the Island Crabcake bowl, which was simply awesome. For lunch, I'm a big fan of the Oyster Po'boy, and my favorite dinner was the Blackened Mahi. I let the bartender talk me into a Goombay Smash with a Meyer's float. It was good enough that I had another, and another, . . .

under cooked oysters, gross chicken tenders, fries were good, we ordered specific changes for each meal and NONE were considered. Completely in edible. Will NOT be coming back.

Good atmosphere. Quick service quick food. Varied menu. It was okay food but overly expensive for the quality I wouldn't pay 10 for a quesadilla again that has no sides. Worth trying but probably not for the price to be honest

This one star is mostly reflective of the service, although I didn't find much of anything to rave about either. We had a large group, probably nine of us, and waited maybe 10 minutes to be sat on a Saturday night. Not too bad. Kathleen was our server. Nice enough girl, but she was clearly overwhelmed. Felt like we waited forever for everything -- drinks, apps (and plates for the apps that we actually had to ask for), meal. Either the servers are making their own cocktails or their bartender needs a fire lit under him/her. My mahi wrap was just meh, and while I did take the other half home, I never ate it. A first for me, as I never throw out food. I ordered my fries "burned" (restaurantspeak for well done) and they were probably the palest of all the plates at our table. She should've sent them back instead of bringing the order to the table. I'm certain she didn't even notice. Not very comfortably air conditioned in here either. And because of that, we drank a lot of water -- er, I should say we tried to drink a lot of water. Every time we asked for a refill (because God forbid anyone actually notice patrons' empty water glasses), Kathleen would bring another glass. Hey, guys, maybe just have someone going around with a pitcher of water? Or better yet, maybe put a pitcher of water on the table and be done with it? As a former server, I am unable to enjoy my meal when I'm so distracted by the lack of professionalism and ineptitude of the restaurant's employees. Attention to detail should be a server's priority, but there was none of that here. If there was a manager on duty, I never saw one. Is there anyone working in this joint who actually gives a shit? About anything?

Loved the authenticity of this restaurant!! Def, your typical beach bar joint which is perfect when you're walking distanc from the ocean. Speedy service and good drinks and food! We will be here again!

If you like fried seafood this a good place. Beach front view and a live band on roof bar gives it a fun vibe. Great service. Call ahead or make a reservation or you will wait in line. Great if you are in really casual attire and don't feel like cleaning up. Love all their frozen drinks.

Not really good food or drinks. I think the attraction is eating on the beach. Sad that they don't do more to make this an experience.

Slow service but fantastic food. Get the crabcake sandwich. Was fantastic. Had a crabcake, fried green tomatoes, and pimento cheese. Wife had this jerk chicken thing, said it was fantastic to. Only complaint was slow service. Had a 7:00 reservation, didn't get seated till almost 8:00. Took a very long time for food after we ordered. That was the only thing keeping this from a 5 star review because the food was so darned good.

We came to Coconut Joe's today and were seated on the porch. The staff is friendly and attentive. We enjoyed appetizers and drinks while we waited for the rest of our family who were still on the road and arrived about 30 minutes later than we did. When they joined us at the table and were ready to order the owner was INCREDIBLY RUDE and SHARPTOUNGUED and told them they had to leave and go back in line for a table of their own. A most delightful beginning to a family week at the beach was ruined. If we had not already ordered and were not half starved we would have left promptly. We will never be back nor ever refer anyone to eat here. Restaurant success starts at the top and she failed miserably.

For being someone with a lot of dietary restrictions - this place was fantastic. Very willing to sub out cheese etc for other vegetables, and their salads are HUGE and delicious. The atmosphere is great - a view of the beach even from inside, and everyone is very friendly. Everything tasted fresh and just all around awesome. A great place if you find yourself in need of a place to eat just off the beach!

The service was great! We sat on the porch and the breeze was just what we needed after spending the day at the beach! Made it just in time for happy hour to start. I ordered the chicken tenders which came with cole slaw and mashed potatoes! Everything was very good!

Coconut Joe's, a million dollar location. After a long week of work and school I knew I had to get to the ocean to touch my toes on the edge of the surf and watch the sun go down. Not a better place close by in Mt. Pleasant than IOP. It was dinner time, but the crowd was manageable. The ambiance is average, casual, and beachy. The cocktails were freshly made to order and delicious. The service was exceptional. Missing cold water white fish from up North, I wasn't confident that I could satisfy this craving from the menu, so I settled on the coconut shrimp. It was delicious, as was the orange marmalade served along side for dipping. I'm always seeking out a unique dining experience off the beaten path with an original menu. While Coconut Joe's doesn't quite fit that bill, we should remember to support all our local business and try not to overlook those that have been around for years. While the menu isn't gourmet, the salads were fresh and all the food was served quickly, hot, and with a smile. It's also a great spot for cocktails later on in the evening from the upper deck listening to the surf crash.

It has been a few weeks since we have been to this restaurant, but I would be remiss in not bringing our experience to the attention of tourists and locals. We choose Coconut Joe's for my mother's birthday, as she wanted to have a view of the ocean. The only redeeming feature of this place. Three of seven of us arrived and were seated. The "waitress" insisted on knowing how the checks were going to be separated. Maybe she doesn't know how to use that function on the computer. Our other four guests had arrived. To her relief that situation was resolved. As other tables were being seated, it was clear she had more than she could handle. The "bartender" had no reason to turn around from her "texting" to be aware of her surroundings. After all, the three seats at her bar were empty. I think she finally realized she had to do something when we repeatedly went to the bar to retrieve our drinks and bring our dirty appetizer plates to her (appetizer-overly seasoned spicy crab dip). We finally ordered our food only to wait and wait for it. I did ask where the manager might be, only to be told she was outside, apparently to busy to check on the situation inside. Much to much for one "manager" to handle. My nephew made the remark that this is a "tourist trap" and I should let this pathetic situation go, however, I said all the more reason to provide excellent service and food. Tourists returning home thinking this is what Charleston has to offer. Shameful. We tried to salvage the evening and consume the overcooked mess in front of us. When I asked the "waitress" if the vegetable were fresh and she said yes, I guess that means that they are freshly opened from a can. I asked for a dessert for my mother's birthday, only to be told they don't have candles (come on!!). Before departing I went to the ladies room. Filthy is being kind. Perhaps the staff does not see this mess as they are hopefully washing their hands after smoking out back by the dumpster. The restrooms should always be checked throughout a busy night. As I exited the bathroom, the "manager" who finally made an appearance inside, completed the evening by calling me over to ask how the everything was. I cannot believe this was not brought to her attention. I explained the poor service and overcooked food and the fact we tried to make the best of this horrible situation. She asked me what she should do. I guess her customer service skills were learned at Golden Corral. Sorry Golden Corral. Not only did she disagree with the suggestion that she should take care of the meal, she engaged the kitchen staff, as well as other guests into the situation, causing quite a scene. There business card even invites you to discuss your bad experience with the manager to correct it. No truth to this. I have worked in the Food and Beverage Industry for 25 years with exceptional mentors here in Charleston. Joe Petro should be ashamed of what he is providing tourists and locals. But apparently he is not aware of what is going on in his restaurant, as I was told he is in Alaska.

My trip to Coconut Joe's was not pleasant. My wife's stake was just shy of shoe leather, and my "stuffed flounder" had a funky smell and didn't taste good. I chose to give the 2 stars because they were very accommodating and refunded everything my wife and I sent back, no questions asked.

We had three family members join the table about 15-20 minutes after we were seated. Our server was great but the owner was inexplicably rude as she broke up our table and sent my uncle, aunt, and cousin on a 35 minute waitlist. Management was particularly rude and curt with us without providing an explanation.

  • Monica W.

I should start out by mentioning I used to work in a seafood restaurant, but immediately when we walked in on a Thursday for lunch the place smelled HORRIBLE. We asked to be seated outside and due to the rain the vinyl sides were pulled down so the smell was not much better. We decided to stay for a drink and ordered an appetizer. We got the triple dip which is a sampler of the crab dip, piemento cheese and salsa. The crab dip was cold and tasted more like a crab salad (think chicken salad, but with crab). The pimento cheese dip had a foul smell, maybe it was old and had a bad after taste. The salsa did look homemade just not to my taste. I have to say that the smell probably caused us to go elsewhere for our meal. The service was great. I would probably only come back to listen to music on the deck.

Not sure what all the bad reviews are for. Yes, coconut joes is a run down shack on the beach, but it fits into the atmosphere very well. Since it was a beautiful day, I requested to be seated outside. This was my first time to the area, and I ordered a crab cake burger, for lunch, which I have never had before. With a military discount, the burger and fries came out to about $11. I know this is not the best seafood restaurant in the area, but I wasn't expecting a five star facility either. I enjoyed the food and the experience, and I would recommend checking this place out if you're hungry at isle of palms.

Went for lunch with the family. The location was perfect. It was nice to sit on porch. If you are going to eat....FORGET IT! IT WAS A $100.00 PILE OF UNEATABLE FOOD. We tried the grouper sandwich (not convinced it was grouper...terrible and old tasting. The crabmeat sandwich was unbearable. The shrimp po-boys had no taste..and their signature coconut shrimp was the worst any of us had ever had. Walk the beach right on by Joes!

We tried here for drinks only but the food looked like typical beach car food. the drinks were pretty good, we were hoping to try the roof top bar but it was cold and breezy, I will defiantly be back to try the roof top bar with the love bands,

This place is awesome. Perfect for the beach scene. When you walk inside you are greeted by cheerful staff who make you feel right at home. There is so much nostalgia throughout the bar and eating area. We were lucky as we were the only couple there at first and were able to walk around and look at everything (and trust me that it is like going back in time to the 50's and 60's). The tables and chairs are all painted by the staff with different scenes. It is like the 60's all over. Have to say that Christine the Assistant GM was so pleasant and friendly as was Sherri our waitress and Roman. The food Wes outstanding and you have to try the Coconut Shrimp. They were made to perfection. The gumbolaya was a toss between s soup and a stew "stoup". It had just the right seasoning and was thick and hot. Loaded with veggies and the rice made it perfect for a cold and rainy night. My wife had the crab bisque which was thick and had an ample amount of crab and flavor along with a crab cake stack that she said was very good. This is a bar restaurant dive that you would find down in Key West. Would definitely recommend this place if just for the nostalgia and 60's music.

Service was horrible 2 out of the 3 times we went! The reason we went the number of time we did was for conveniences. The first time was last Saturday, we went to have drink and order something to eat before we could check in. Food was OK, combo basket can't really mess that up. On the other hand service was Horrible. The lady was rude as rude would be, ended up going inside to get a water and a cup, the girl bartender was just was rude. My sister and I went for breakfast Thursday morning, had great customer service and food was wonderful. Went back Friday even to get take out, wings and drinks. Once again rude bartender and when we got back to the house the wings were all wrong! Make sure you check your orders before leaving!

I quite enjoyed my salad topped with blackened Mahi Mahi. The ingredients were fresh and varied. Excellent mango salsa, cheese, almonds, lettuce and the portion of fish was adequate for lunch. Nothing to write home about but certainly an acceptable place for lunch on the beach.

With a name like Coconut Joe's we just had to go. Not a tiki bar but it does overlook the beach. (it happens while we having lunch someone almost drowned so there was a lot of action to see). But back to the restaurant; we went for lunch and it wasn't crowded and the rooftop was closed. Our server Brittany was very friendly. We both order the BMOC burger (a little pricey) which was filling but still a burger. Also ordered the Goombay Smash, in which we had a few. With not many places to eat on the island, this was nice. I'm sure it's much busier weekends but it was fine for us. Note; kid's meals come with a free sand dollar. since we didn't have a child, my wife had to explore the beach to find her own sand dollar.

4 of us sat on the rooftop on a Sunday afternoon. The girl bartender was rude, the beer was room temperature, she checked my ID twice. They didn't serve food up there which I guess makes sense because of the birds. The live music was TERRIBLE. The middle of the summer and the guy was playing Christmas music! So bizarre.

The coconut shrimp is pretty tasty. As for the bloody Mary, not so much. The views are incredible. There are no beach front bars or restaurants anywhere here. Well, very few that are worth trying... Coconut Joes also has some great music that comes through there. Eat good shrimp, listen to great music overlooking the ocean... Just don't order a bloody Mary!

While I'm not a big fan of Coconut Joe's food, but I am a big fan of their rooftop patio. I've been here a couple of times for food, once for breakfast and one for lunch; neither time was I very impressed by the food. For breakfast I had pancakes and eggs; the pancakes were rubbery and the eggs were blah, both of which were served cold. This past weekend I had lunch here and got the spicy ranch jerk chicken wrap with red rice; the wraps were a little messy as if it had watered down ranch on it and the red rice was just ok. I have a mixed opinion about service here; while the servers and bartenders are very nice here, the service is super slow. Don't expect to order something to eat and get in and out fast. They do have a smaller restaurant called "Joe's to Go" next to Coconut Joe's that I haven't tried, but I'm sure they are probably a little faster there. The best thing about Coconut Joe's is the rooftop patio. It's a great place to have a couple of drinks while listening to live music and enjoying the beautiful scenery of the IOP beach.

This is probably one of the worst restaurants I have ever been to. The tropical chicken tasted awful and we couldn't cut it with a steak knife. The steak was plain and had gristles in it. I do not reccomend this restaurant and if you value your life don't eat that chicken.

DON'T forget your I.D. if you plan to drink! Signs telling you this and they were serious with me, had to walk back to the condo to get it. Had the spicy grouper and shrimp with red beans and rice.... The shrimp was good and spiced just right! Wish I had a whole plate of shrimp! The grouper was ok but the rice and beans were just awful. The beans were mushy and the rice was too. The boyfriend got crab cakes and grilled shrimp with fries. He liked his meal but did say it wasn't anything special. Overall, very "chain" quality food.

We had just settled onto the island for a long week of relaxation. We found ourselves in that familiar time slot of having missed lunch due to air travel and extending the afternoon unpacking. So, we really just wanted a place to unwind with a drink (or two!) and something to fit the bill of an early dinner. Well, we had heard Coconut Joe's might be just such a place, so here we were! First impression: we had to meander around another dive to find them. Upon ascending the staircase to the rooftop patio (recommended by you Yelpers!), we found an abandoned reception area....so we waited for the hostess to return and seat us. The place was not crowded, so we were seated right away. The menu offers a decent variety of dishes. We settled for a smattering of seafood sandwiches - none of which were particularly impressive - and a tall pitcher of King David margaritas. The drinks made the experience for us, coupled with the 40-year old classic rock pumping out the speakers! An excellent view of the beach/ocean made this just the relaxing time we were seeking. Not a bad place at all...we've certainly found better spots food-wise,but the atmosphere was relaxing, the margaritas were cold and and the service was good.

I don't know why this place has such bad reviews. I will say that we only ate breakfast here but it was delicious! I got the veggie bowl which had fresh veggies and was really yummy. Everyone else at the table also got bowls and each was eaten to the last drop. The biscuit was awesome too! We came back later in the day for drinks and they were freshly made to order. A rare treat at the beach. The drawback was that it was insanely slow to get through the bar crowd. However, it was worth the wait. As an added bonus they had love music on the roof deck that was actually decent. I'll definitely be back during our stay here!

The only reason I'm giving two stars and not one is because it was nice to eat a meal with the sound of the ocean in the background. Other than that, the entire experience was subpar. Our server, Emily, was not very attentive at all. I'm a server as well so I know how hectic things can get; but the thing is- it wasn't even super busy. My sister and I both ordered simple alcoholic beverages, a beer and tequila, which took over 10 minutes to get. In the meantime, her other table directly beside of us, ended up walking out on their food after their first round of drinks. That should tell you something right there. I ended up breaking "server code" and just ordering my next drink from the bar bc i couldn't stand to wait around like the first time, for one drink (it was a long drive down here okay). I got the Jamaican jerk chicken club with fries, and it was okay. Sloppy presentation. Overall, the food is just average, nothing special. Although the ending tab wasn't super expensive, I would've rather spent it elsewhere.

I'm not really sure where to start. The place feels very run down and gave me an overall impression that nobody cares. I ordered a burger that was advertised as a steak burger made of ground sirloin. I requested it medium rare and the waitress informed me that the kitchen only cooked burgers well done. I requested that they cook it for me as rare as possible and she returned telling me that they couldn't cook it to my request because they didn't want to be liable if I got sick. That's understandable I guess. Well I get the burger and quickly realize why they can't cook them to order. It was a precooked garbage patty which reminded me of elementary school food. The actual burger was gross. The toppings made it edible. The jerk chicken wrap was flavorless. The service is mediocre. I will most likely never return.

Awful experience! Tilapia, oysters, shrimp and crab cakes ALL SOGGY! The only good thing we had was the French fries. There was only one server and he actually rolled his eyes my husband.

The place is a typical open air beach bar joint with an open rooftop bar that lets you see for miles in every direction. Didn't try the food, but serious dings for the drink prices. I paid $4 for a CANNED domestic beer. The import I drank was even more! The bar was busy and the 3 bartenders seemed to struggle to meet demand. In addition while I was waiting for my drink I watched them run out of 3 types of liquor and have no more to replace them with.

This was a horrible experience. I came today with two friends and the minute we walked in (at 1pm) the manager saw my clearly marked service animal and said he was not allowed. I politely stated that he is indeed a service animal and was wearing his vest stating so, and the manager realized he had to comply and said we should sit outside. It is extremely hot out, but not wanting to push the manager to be even more rude, we complied. We were then told it would be a 30 minute wait and we could kill time by ordering a drink at the bar if we wanted. The wait time was no problem so we went to the patio bar and ordered a few drinks. 30 minutes later we were sat at an outdoor table and it took about 5 minutes for a waitress to greet us. She seemed 'not all there' and barely heard us order our drinks and appetizer before she was off doing something else before we finished telling her what we wanted. Drinks came, surprisingly the appetizer came, but (no shock to us) it was the wrong appetizer. I was able to catch her within 5 minutes to ask if it was correct and also place our food orders. She took the wrong app and brought out the correct app, but said that it wasn't her fault, that She had grabbed the wrong appetizer....(so it was her who made the mistake... Weird). Afterwards, our food came out in about 20 minutes and it all looked fine, however everything was extremely messy. The fish 'taco' was really a wrap, and dripped a watery sauce all over the place. The quesadilla was good, but average at best. We never were offered drink refills or even water and we were not asked how the food was until we were ready for our check. Before the check came, I fed my service animal A small amount because he works 24/7 due to my medical condition. A completely different server came over and told me I was not allowed to feed my dog. Instead of arguing, I replied that it was no problem. However, at this point my friends and I were pretty irritated. My dog eats when I do. Always has, always will, and no one has ever had a problem with me allowing me service animal to eat when I do. His job is 24/7 and I feed him when I eat to ensure he doesn't miss a meal. Horrible customer service, terrible management skills, and the food looked as though it came from a prison cafeteria. We will not be returning and I would never recommend anyone waste their time at this awful establishment.

For the most part, when its not busy, I enjoy going here. I like the evening/ night time to hear the ocean and grab a drink. There is a pretty big top deck and at night the weather is cooler up there. The normal bartenders are pretty legit... I've had a bad experience during the busy time that involved a waitress more concerned with counting her tips then forgetting she said she would take my order in a minute, and waited on people in line behind me.... Not a fan of hers!

Typical touristy restaurant. Seemed a little dirty. Had a party of 2. They sat us at a table for 6 in the center of the dining room when there were seats open outside. Then they asked us to move after we had ordered. The server was very nice, and it wasn't his fault that they sat us in a weird place to begin with. Food was overpriced for the quality. I hoped it would be better, because we were trying to stay on IOP. I probably wouldn't go there again unless it was just for drinks.

This place is all about the location. The view of the beach is great and the rooftop is fantastic for a casual getaway. The reggae is good enough to be worthy of the rastafarian group that hangs out to dance, so it was definitely pleasing to my ears. I honestly can't complain about the food. It is good, not gourmet, but prepared well and tasty. The prices are a little steep, but I guess that's what is to be expected at a tourist attraction on the beach. The service is not always the quickest, but not a horrible long wait either. It is still somewhere I do not mind landing when I'm at IOP. Good for the ambiance and some decent beach grub.

Coconut Joes is a good time. I've been a handful of times between looking for a bite to eat while on the beach or enjoying a few beers on the roof. It can be pretty touristy but the view from the top makes up for it all. It's by far the best place to have a beer and enjoy the view from the roof deck. They often have local bands playing tunes with a very laid back atmosphere. The food is decent when you're looking for some sustenance after relaxing in the sand. Nothing crazy bit it does the job.

The only thing this place has going for it is the view/location. Since they're a central spot on Isle of Palms they're clearly not worried about repeat customers. Terrible service. My friend ordered chicken, took one bite, and couldn't take another it was so bad. She told the server and he got defensive and told her it's cooked on a timer. (What!/?&/?) She asked him to take it back. When our checks came out, he brought her one and we asked to speak with the manager. She told us that she looked at the chicken and didn't see anything wrong with it. Terrible. The only reason this place got 2 stars instead of one is because the crab dip was very good.

The bartender was nice. I couldn't bring myself to purchase an $18 fish platter. It just seemed overpriced for this place. The nachos were grody - don't get them. The fish taco came wrapped up like a burrito. I was so glad I didn't order it because a fish burrito just seems unappetizing (and my friend didn't eat hers). I can confirm that the corn dog on the kids menu is delicious. The bartender was friendly as can be. Stick to drinks and fried kids food and you'll be good to go!

Not a great place to eat. Very unfriendly; our waitress was atrocious to say the least. Will never come back to eat here ever. Although the waitress was reported to the manager, I doubt very seriously that the waitress was repiman

Nice view of the beach and crowd! The second floor patio is for dining, the top floor is for drinking: no food or the birds will find you. They also play live music on the roof. If you have had enough of the outdoors, there is plenty of seating inside. Prompt seating and it's a very popular place. As far as beach food, it's very casual dining and of good quality. The service was good too. The overall ambiance wasn't too memorable...in fact, I can't think of it's theme other than "I'm on the beach, I have tables, I serve food." But I left happy and full so it did the job! The salad was fresh and flavorful! The women's bathroom was down to one stall, not too clean and tidy, but I'm sure beat the public bathroom next door. It's a nice place to go to eat and take a break from the sand beneath your toes.

3:00 Monday afternoon and restaurant almost completely empty--seated us, a party of 10. As the last member of our party started to the table, she was stopped and told she couldn't have a sleeping baby in a stroller at the table. Really? Our table was all the way on the wall. Went down to Banana Cabana and had a delicious meal and no one cared about the stroller! I guess Coconut Joes can afford to turn away $300+

The service was okay. The food was not. I ordered twice; the first selection included the rice which was hours if not days old. The second selection of wings was not worth it. The rooftop music was okay but the price for the drinks wasn't great. If you're in walking distance and there is no where else to go you might like it BUT if you have to drive, drive somewhere else.

This place is RAD! The review is only for the vibe and drinks... We went up to the roo top bar and were greeted with an incredible view of IOP beach. There was a great warm breeze and a fantastic reggae band playing. Quite a few drink choices-try the Coconut Cooler-AMAZINGNESS! Patrons were diverse and nice-ready to dance with you if you feel the need :) and definitely not bad on the eyes! Have a few beers, enjoy the view... its a great time @ Coconut Joes!

I had the fish tacos, it was more like a fish burrito, but none the less very very good. It was a significant portion of perfectly cooked mahi mahi inside. I would give this place five stars if that was all I was evaluating. Unfortunately, the service was very slow, had to ask a couple times for things twice before getting them and the fries that came with everyone's food were forgetful at best.

Stopped in for an early dinner and there was short wait, maybe 15 minutes. We went upstairs to the roof top deck to wait for our table. We just enjoyed conversation anad didn't have a drink, it was early and we had a big night ahead of us, so we were pacing ourselves. Got seated, inside, which was fine, we had requested first available. There was a big table seated by us, and we were a little concerned that it would be a while for our food to come out (we had somewhere else to be at 7) but the food came out in a reasonable amount of time. I had the fried oyster platter, which came with cole slaw, fries and coconut fritters. Coconut fritters were dry and more like a dessert then a hush puppy but that didn't stop me from eating them. Slaw wasn't anything unexpected but it was tasty. I always hesitate to order fried food, if I'm going to spend the calories, I want it to be worthwhile. I took a chance and was glad I did, the cooks know what they're doing there. The oysters were crispy outside and perfectly set but not overcooked on the inside. Prices was inline with the area and our bill was correct when the server brought it out. Service was friendly and efficent. The hostess who didn't sit us on top of some other diners after I asked her to not seat us at a particular table (Why do restaurants do that?!! Spread folks out a bit!) Waitress was friendly and checked back often enough but not too much to be a bother.

I can see the potential. Typical cheesy beach bar. Can be either the best or the worse place ever. We were there with a group on a rainy day. The place smelled like cat pee. Roof deck was closed but we went up anyway. They wouldn't let us take pitchers up. Had to go back down when we wanted another drink. They could care less that we doubled the occupancy. So...we left.

For a weekend night during the Spoleto festival, the wait was shorter than expected and service was prompt. As a nearly native Charlestonian, I must say that I was disappointed that the roof top bar now carries an admission fee. Luckily, they play loud enough that you can hear it from the free benches and tables downstairs. Had the island burger with fries. Delicious! And topped it off with a almond ecstasy mixed which was awesome but not worth the $7. I'd get it again for $5. Overall good dinner and great vibe.

How does one review a restaurant that made you as sick as you've ever been in your entire life? Lets find out. Tell you what, before we get to the tsunami of awful that was my food poisoning, lets discuss the service. I arrived in a party of 5 while on vacation with my family. It was about 2:30pm when we were greeted and told that it would be about 20 minutes for the first available table. We went to the bar and had some drinks along with our trusty Coconut Joes buzzer. We had some drinks and waited about 40 minutes before my brother decided to check in with the hostess. He was told that they had been paging us via the buzzer for 15 minutes. A broken buzzer will happen, but we could see the hostess stand from the bar. And we told them we were at the bar. And we had a buzzer. You would think maybe they'd poke around the 500 square foot bar area a little if for no other reason than to retrieve their crappy buzzer. Oh well, not the end of the world right? We were seated outside and the server showed up about 10 minutes later complaining about having too many tables at once. Drinks took about 15 minutes to arrive and food took another 50 minutes AND us finding the manager to actually get our food. Lunch was 'meh' and I suspected it had been sitting out for a bit, however, at that point we were starving and would have eaten anything. Bad move. Oh and I almost forgot, the server also told us the kitchen was a mess that day and that they didn't really know what they were doing. Awesome. After we ate, credit where credit is due, the manager did the right thing and comp'd our entire meal. He knew they screwed up bad and good on him for the free meal. But wait, was the food really free? I ask you, what is 6 hours of lost sleep combined with total and complete gastrointestinal misery worth to you? I'll bet it's more than $75 worth of sandwiches. I would have paid for lunch 5 times over to avoid the fate which awaited me 12 hours later. I tell you, when you can't decide if you need to sit or kneel before the throne - it's just a situation a man doesn't prepare himself mentally. In closing, I suggest hitting up Coconut Joes if you need to lose 5 lbs in a hurry and you have a day and a half to kill. Otherwise, run far, far away from this petri dish of an establishment.

From Caitlin's Trio: Crab cake = good Shrimp = good Mahi-Mahi = good Red Rice = excellent Black Beans = average The Shrimp and Grits - all good. View = awesome Odd characters occasionally seen on premise = interesting Great place to get good grub with a view of the ocean. You'll pay for the view.

One might think a restaurant on the beach would serve fresh yummy seafood. Not so much here. My husband was so disappointed in the menu, he didn't even order anything. We will stop somewhere else on folly beach.

I'm giving 3 stars for the fun beach vibe, the live entertainment and we had a sweet, attentive waitress. They have some fun cocktails that you can order by the pitcher. However, the food was more like a 2. DO NOT order the crab cakes, they are horrible, completely inedible! My meal also came with fried shrimp that was fine. The grouper sandwich seemed to be the best pick as other diners with me rated that as decent. So go there for the atmosphere, the music and the entertainment. Don't go for the food.

We went over the Windjammer down the street first and since no one had a clue what was going on there we walked over to Coconut Joe's. Fantastic view from the rooftop (where you basically just drink) and even from the floor below where there is table service. This is definitely a good stop to grab some seafood, a cold drink, and watch the waves on a sunny day. The waitress was the opposite of a sunny day. She introduced herself with a face that said "OK are you going to order?" No, "Hey I'm Sally what can I get you to drink?" Not out and out rude, but just unfriendly. We ordered some chips and salsa and they came out at the SAME time as the entrees which is totally annoying. On the table we had two seafood trios, some salmon, and coconut shrimp. I enjoyed the crabcake and shrimp a lot, but there was no seasoning on the mahi-mahi. There was a side a sauce that partially saved the fish. Even though we ordered drinks at the bar first, the server still added an additional soda to all of our orders. We didn't really need refills either, so she just wanted a larger tip. All in all, decent food, fantastic view, and an unpleasant waitress.

We love, love, love this place and visit there at least twice when we are in town each summer. Laid back attitude, great people watching, good service and strong fruity drinks. We will always be back for more. See you July 4th week.

First of all, the location can't be beat as it sits right on the Atlantic Ocean. I had fried shrimp and clams as an appetizer and as apps go they were pretty good. I especially liked the ample squeeze bottles of sauces...the tops were cut open large enough for proper flow of the condiments, great idea. For my lunch I had the crab cakes and they were cooked properly but had a terrible taste to them like someone put too much spice in the mix and they were a little fishy tasting meaning they were getting old. I'd try this place again as it was well occupied and perhaps the cook staff was having a bad day.

Revelation 3:16 "So then because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I will spew you out of my mouth." Who knew the Apostle Paul had run into the wait staff of Coconut Joe's? This place is a pretty good beach-front bar and grill (bar on the roof, restaurant on the first story) with some good food for a slightly overpriced tourist trap/convenient eatery. It's also easy to get to from any parking (including the nearby sea cabins) and pretty easy to find.

Went for their all you can eat crab legs last night. By far the worst crab legs I've ever tasted! They were over cooked, mealy, and had an unusual sweet taste to them. I asked the server to have the chef cook them about 3 minutes because they were over done. Well that didn't work. A good crab leg is one that when broken in half, the meat is easily pulled from the shell. These you had to dig out. Talked to the manager and she revealed the problem. They boil their legs. That's unacceptable as anyone who has cooked their own legs know that you steam them. They got me once but fortunately that will be all. Don't waste your time!

This place has a rooftop bar where local bands cover "Margaritaville" and "Brown Eyed Girl", so I didn't have high hopes for this place. But I was genuinely surprised at how good it was. The food was delicious and cooked exactly right, and the staff was still friendly, even though it was later in the evening. Would absolutely visit again!

  • brian b.

You should be ashamed. Yes I'm the same person from tripadvisor. All you can eat crab legs are expensive. But my brother loves crab legs and he ordered them. Every leg was stuck to shell. In case you didn't know that is a sign that they are over cooked. And all "fresh fish" is frozen Sysco product. I know what it looks like and for your prices to as cheap as they are for a grouper sandwich it's frozen. So knowing this info. I gambled on your shrimp and grits. Fried grits ( pollenta), awful white sauce. Best part about that dish was frozen sauasge. Atleast it had a sear. I live here and can honestly say that was the worst meal I ever had. Also I know special and lump crab is expensive and substituting claw meat in your cakes I get but you gotta make them taste good. The tourists need to know your food sucks. Your just a bar with some music on the beach. Even our waitress told my sister in law not to get dessert and to go to the ice cream shop. I'm sure your key line pie is a frozen Sysco product as well so maybe we were better off. I eat a lot in the area,by area I'm including downtown. And your food is just as bad as Hymans. Won't ever be back to eat. I'll go to mount p for food. Tourist be aware if you are ever offered a grouper sandwich for $14 dollars. It's frozen

This place has all of the appearances of being a haven for tourist, but dont let the looks fool you - the food is outstanding, the service is good and pleasant and the view is great. I had the Coconut Shrimp and my wife had the Shrimp Wrap, both were well seasoned and great flavor. If I had one complaint is we had sat out on the balcony and the mosquitoes were horrible! I got bitten at least 7-10 bites on my neck and ankles. My kids gotten eaten up too. I know this isn't the restaurants fault, but just a warning for those who might want to eat out on the balcony - make sure to cover yourself in "Off" or Deet before dining.

Ok, now I have a strange review.... I ordered the grilled shrimp wrap and it was out of this world!!!! Everyone we went with loved their food. About 5 min before we were leaving, we noticed a roach crawling on the floor! Yes, gross! In general, we would have NEVER have thought about going back, but you have to take into consideration that we were eating in the outside part if the restaurant. Either way still gross, but understandable that outside bugs will and could still fly in.

My wife and I love going here. It's been the place we go when we want to eat at the beach and have brought many visitors here. We've yet to be disappointed. I typically get the Big Fish sandwich. It's similar to grouper and usually a generous amount although I was cheated once. My wife has enjoyed their hamburger a couple of times although Poe's on Sullivans Island is a better bet if that's what you're looking for. Joe's is one of the few restaurants you'll find right on the beach. Parking is free on Ocean Blvd during the off season but is metered otherwise.

The perfect place by the beach offering a place to chill and have a drink or a place to have a quick meal after a swim in the ocean. The menu offers a breath of standard pub fair with the addition of a touch of jerk, BBQ and seafood. The food was okay but not sure I would write home about it. The challenge was with the service. I am assuming it was an off day and would consider giving the place a second try.

They defining characteristic of any beach bar is whether or not it is; (i) directly on the beach, or (ii) just off the beach. Coconut Joe's = prototypical on the beach bar. 1. LOCATION. This place is just at the base of the IOP connector and bridge. Snuggled between the few tall hotels on the Isle of Palms and the limited downtown area, the bar is right on the beach. 2. VIEW. The second story has a wrap around porch that overlooks the beach. The rooftop bar has the best view you could have of the surrounding beach. 3. MUSIC. They had the classic beach guitar guy mixing in some classic songs as well as some more modern stuff. The calendar looked packed with similar groups. 4. DRINKS. The rooftop had solid margaritas, beers by the bottle and can and a decent mix of frozen beers. 5. FOOD. Menu looked good and the people we saw eating had some good looking burgers and fries. Didn't eat there myself. We'll be back.

Love the overall experience at Joes! First off you get a table looking directly over the ocean-beautiful. The food here is really good too. I've had everything from the Mahi burrito (incredible) to the fried seafood platter (also better than most). But my absolute favorite item is the gumbolaya appetizer. It's a cross between gumbo and jumbolaya. Very spicy with chicken and sausage, various veggies. This stuff is better than ANY I've had up an down the gulf coast to include New Orleans. The chef makes the batch fresh every morning so that it ready by 11am or so. They also offer various brunch dishes. The one I get is a couple of grit cakes loaded with sausage gravy, onions, cheese, fried potatoes and of course more gravy. Note: you can substitute biscuits for the grit cakes. This is an absolute beast of a breakfast but don't worry. I polish of mine and half the wifey's. This place is probably construed as a tourist spot.. but who cares. The food and view are consistently impeccable and better than most anything else around. The also offer very specials deals/discounts to locals.

Service: not good. Waited an hour for an admittedly large table on a Tuesday night. Could not make a manhattan at the bar. Really? No vermouth. Seems like bar ownership 101. Weird flavor in crabcakes. Coconut shrimp were pretty good, but quite dark. Would not recommend wasting $ here. Look at the ocean, and eat somewhere else.

Granted, this place may be a little gimmicky, and somewhat touristy, but you can't beat an elevated deck overlooking the beach in Charleston / Isle of Palms. Even if you've been a lot of places, you'll *really* remember this one - just go ;)

Great view of the ocean! Nice location - easy to find and in a nice section of town, lots of little shops near by and a good beach. Pina C's were excellent! The reason for 3 stars: black beans where really unusual and the crab cakes had a very different taste to them. I'm glad we checked it out though - had a lot of fun!
